TfGM using cloud-based data platform to analyse crucial data

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has is using a cloud-based data platform to analyse crucial mobility data.

The public body, responsible for co-ordinating transport services throughout the Greater Manchester region, is using the platform built by Snowflake, the cloud data platform.

It is quite a significant move, because it means TfGM can now ingest data, extract insights and gain value to support its variety of business operations.

Users have a more seamless experience when travelling around Greater Manchester as a result.

Given that TfGM works with bus, tram and train operators, overseeing some of Manchester’s busiest roads, it is obvious that data and technology are key in organising this and also improving the range of travel options for people in the region.

With more than 5.6 million journeys made across Greater Manchester’s transport network each day, the task of ensuring services run smoothly is a huge one.

One of the challenges has been capturing information of individual journeys, and analysing this to gain insights; this chagned with the migration to Snowflake last summer, which means TfGM can focus on gaining business value from data, improving the network for people and those companies who rely on it.

The effect of this new platform is already being felt; the Metrolink network in Greater Manchester – the UK’s largest rail network – went contactless in July 2019. This is quick and easy, delivering customers the cheapest fares for their journeys.

But TfGM needed to use network data to understand and make improvements to the services offered to customers; the anonymised data helps the operator to understand what is happening throughout the network and respond to incidents in real-time.

It will bring long-term improvements and products.

Malcolm Lowe, Head of IT at Transport for Greater Manchester, commented: “We have lots of data and information on the transport network and the challenge is capturing this information, the dependencies and getting insight from it.

“Snowflake allows us to meet these challenges and focus on business value.”
