Annual LERS review report reveals logistics sector reducing its emissions

A report from the Logistics Emissions Reduction Scheme (LERS) has revealed that progress is being made in the sector to reduce emissions as part of the road to zero drive.

The annual report showed that there are a range of possibilities available when all those within logistics commit to reducing emissions and improving efficiency.

LERS is a voluntary initiative within the sector that records, reports and reduces transport emissions; sponsored by partners including Bridgestone, LERS represents more than 130 members who operate in excess of 88,000 commercial vehicles.

Data in the LERS report revealed members saw their average greenhouse gas emissions fall by 4% last year.

The eighth annual report covers 2017 and also found that members decreased their average kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per vehicle km to 0.72 – down from 0.75 i 2016.

Elsewhere, almost half of its members’ HGVs, as well as 44% of their vans are ready for the implementation of Clean Air Zones and London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, thanks to an upgrade to the Euro 6 model, which is much more emission-friendly.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA), which represents all of logistics, has welcomed the report.

Rebecca Kite, Environment Policy Manager, has previously spoken to Business Britain about the burden on vehicles to improve air quality.

This report, she said, shows logistics is “heading in the right direction.”

She said: “LERS is setting a positive example to the industry and is paving the way for a brighter, greener future.

“The average emissions from LERS members are close to 13% lower per vehicle km than the industry average, showcasing what can be achieved with determination and the right support.

“In addition to this, LERS members fuel costs are 13% lower than industry as a whole.

“While there’s still much to be done to achieve national emission reduction targets, most notably the government’s voluntary industry commitment to reduce HGV GHG emissions by 15% by 2020, this report shows the logistics sector is heading in the right direction.”
